A major environmental protest is underway in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, where local residents and activists have been guarding trees slated for felling as part of the proposed Dehradun-Rishikesh Highway road widening project between Bhan ki Wali and Ranipokhari. Speaking to the media, local advocate Ashutosh Kothari said the protest has continued for five days, urging authorities not to cut mature trees that provide oxygen and help maintain ecological balance.
He also warned that removing the trees could increase temperatures, reduce soil moisture retention, and cause long-term environmental damage.
