(Photo Credit: X) Iran has announced that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei will hold a memorial ceremony for his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in Tehran on Tuesday, although it remains unclear whether he will attend the event in person. According to the announcement, the ceremony for the late Iranian leader will be held on Tuesday, July 23, from 5 pm to 7 pm. The notice described it as a memorial for the “martyred mujahid Imam". The announcement comes after Mojtaba Khamenei has remained out of public view since succeeding his father as Supreme Leader following Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s death. Mojtaba absent from funeral Mojtaba Khamenei did not appear publicly on Sunday as funeral prayers for his father were led by three of his brothers during one of the largest mourning ceremonies held since the late leader’s death.
State television showed Mostafa, Meysam and Masoud Khamenei standing beside the coffins at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, where thousands of mourners gathered. The coffins of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and his 14-month-old granddaughter were placed together for the funeral prayers inside the sprawling religious complex. The absence of the new Supreme Leader from the ceremony drew attention as he has not been seen in public since assuming Iran’s highest position after the killing of his father. Mojtaba vows to avenge father’s killing Days after Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was laid to rest, Mojtaba Khamenei issued his first public statement since the funeral, promising revenge for his father’s death. His father was killed during the joint US-Israeli strikes in late February. In a statement reported by AFP, the new Supreme Leader said, “Vengeance is the will of our nation and must inevitably be carried out." He added, “This matter depends neither on my personal existence nor on that of other officials.
Whether we are present or not, it will come to pass." The statement was released only hours after US President Donald Trump warned against any attempt to assassinate him. US-Iran tensions rise again Mojtaba Khamenei assumed the position of Supreme Leader after the death of his father but has not been publicly seen since before the war. In his statement, he also said the Islamic Republic had prepared a list of individuals to be targeted. The latest remarks come as tensions between Tehran and Washington have intensified once again following the collapse of the June 17 ceasefire agreement. In recent days, both countries have exchanged fire and stepped up their rhetoric, raising fresh concerns over the conflict. The announcement of Tuesday’s memorial ceremony has therefore drawn attention not only because it honours Iran’s late Supreme Leader but also because it could mark Mojtaba Khamenei’s first public appearance since taking over the country’s highest office. However, Iranian authorities have not confirmed whether he will personally attend the event.
