Rapid Read Norway's Erling Haaland (AFP) Erling Haaland’s remarkable FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday as England edged Norway 2-1 after extra time to book their place in the semi-finals. Norway’s talisman, who had scored seven goals in his first four matches of the tournament, was kept off the scoresheet for the first time as England’s defence successfully contained one of world football’s most prolific strikers. The Manchester City forward struggled to impose himself for long periods in the sweltering South Florida conditions and was substituted with around 15 minutes of extra time remaining as Norway searched desperately for an equaliser.

After the final whistle, Haaland and his former Borussia Dortmund teammate shared an embrace before the Norwegian striker slowly walked off the pitch, his World Cup dream over. Following the defeat, Haaland was seen staring off into the distance in disbelief, with tears building up in his eyes, as his dream run at the World Cup came to an end.
