In a significant push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing, the Ministry of Defence is set to open the production of Astra air-to-air missiles to private sector companies. The move is aimed at expanding India's defence industrial base, increasing production capacity, and accelerating the development of indigenous missile systems under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' and 'Make in India' initiatives.
The Astra missile, developed by DRDO, is one of India's key beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missile systems used by the Indian Air Force. Allowing private firms to participate in its production is expected to strengthen defence manufacturing, promote innovation, and enhance India's long-term military preparedness.
Watch this report for the latest updates on the Defence Ministry's decision, the role of private industry, and what it means for India's defence capabilities.
