The United States has launched a fresh round of strikes on Iran, marking the third major flare-up between the two nations this week. The military action follows an attack by Iranian forces on a Cyprus-flagged container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel suffered a fire and significant engine room damage, leaving one civilian crew member missing.
The US claims the strikes, ordered by the US President, are in retaliation for Iran failing to honour a ceasefire deal. In response to ships using a US-designated route along the Oman coastline, Iranian forces targeted the vessel and have now announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to all maritime traffic.
