Mojtaba Khamenei’s First Message After Ali Khamenei’s Funeral: ‘Vengeance Is The Will’ Published By, Last Updated: July 11, 2026, 21:26 IST Tensions between Iran and the US sides have reignited with the collapse of the June 17 ceasefire pact. Rapid Read A flag bearing portraits of Iran's slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his son, the current Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, is seen installed along a street. (AFP photo) Days after his father, Ali Khamenei, was laid to rest, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, on Saturday vowed to avenge his killing in the joint US-Israeli strikes in late February. His statement came hours after US President Donald Trump warned against any attempt to assassinate him. “Vengeance is the will of our nation and must inevitably be carried out," the Supreme Leader wrote in his first message since his father’s funeral this week, AFP reported.
“This matter depends neither on my personal existence nor on that of other officials. Whether we are present or not, it will come to pass," he added. US-Iran Tensions: Target List Ready? The Iranian leader was elevated to the level of Supreme Leader after his father’s killing but has not been spotted publicly since before the war. He noted the Islamic Republic had compiled a list of individuals to be targeted. Tensions between both sides have reignited again with the collapse of the June 17 ceasefire pact. Lately, both sides have intensified their rhetoric after exchanges of fire this week. Following attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz earlier this week, Trump declared their ceasefire was over. While mediators have been trying to salvage diplomacy, Iranian media reported that a delegation from Qatar travelled to Iran on Friday. Trump’s Threat To Iran Trump warned on Truth Social that any attempt by Iran to assassinate him would trigger a devastating military response from Washington.
He said the US military was prepared to “completely decimate" Iran if such a threat materialised. “1000 Missiles are Locked and Loaded and aimed at the Islamic Republic of Iran, with thousands of more to immediately follow, should the Iranian Government act on its threat, pronounced in many corners of the Globe, to assassinate, or attempt to assassinate, the sitting President of the United States of America, in this case, ME!," Trump wrote. As tensions escalated, mediators sought to revive diplomacy, with Iran’s Tasnim news agency reporting that a Qatari delegation had arrived in Tehran to bolster Qatar’s role as a mediator. While Trump described ongoing talks with Iran as “a waste of time", Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had honoured last month’s memorandum of understanding.
