At least 15 Indian tourists died after a boat carrying 36 people capsized off Vietnam's southern island of Phu Quoc. The vessel, travelling from Hòn Mê island to An Thoi port, overturned approximately 400 meters into the sea. The boat was carrying 32 Indian tourists, three crew members, and one attendant, with 21 people surviving the incident. Initial reports suggest that rough sea conditions, large waves, and a potentially overweight vessel contributed to the tragedy.
The deceased include 10 tourists from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh, and two from Kerala. The Indian embassy in Vietnam has established emergency response centers in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to assist the affected families. The Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu have assured logistical support and assistance to the bereaved families. Rescue operations were promptly deployed, with locals assisting in providing CPR to the rescued tourists.
The mortal remains of the deceased are expected to be brought back to India by Monday.
