The T.M. Krishna–PARI Award 2026, which honours individuals whose work bridges art and journalism while amplifying the voices of historically underrepresented communities, was presented to seven young photojournalists during an event at Lalit Kala Akademi in Chennai on Friday. Carnatic musician and author T.M. Krishna presented the awards to K. Mukesh, Karthikeyan R., Keerthi S., Hairunisha K., Noor Nisha K., K.
Ravikumar and Subagomathi Muppidathi. The awardees were trained by photographer M. Palani Kumar, who leads the People's Photographers Collective. Each of the seven recipients also received a cash prize of ₹30,000. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Krishna said: "The idea is that this award is just a little step to inspire them to do more and thank them also for what they did; also see them do much more in this intersection of photography and journalism." Commenting on the display of photographs by another set of young photographers trained by Mr. Palani Kumar, veteran journalist and author P.
Sainath said: "In this country, 80% of water collection time is by women and girls and the photographs perfectly capture that." Writer and journalist Jeyarani and human rights activist Thirumurugan Gandhi spoke. Another batch of Mr. Kumar's students Sakthi Muneeshwari, Aathi Selvam, Janani, Monika, Munees Prabha, Jebhamalai Thangam and Ponnu Lakshmi have exhibited works portraying workers engaged in salt-pan labour, palmyra product collection, and wood charcoal production.
