(Photo: X) US lawmaker Ro Khanna’s claim that he was detained in the West Bank by Israeli settlers armed with M4 rifles has drawn attention to one of the most widely used military weapons in the world. Khanna, a Democratic lawmaker from California, alleged that armed settlers blocked his delegation during a visit to a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank and prevented them from leaving the area. “These hoodlums came in with machine guns — M4s, American-made rifles — and they detained us. They blocked off the road and then called the IDF," Khanna said while describing the incident.
His remarks have renewed interest in the M4 Carbine, the standard infantry weapon used by much of the United States military and a firearm that has become synonymous with modern warfare. What Is The M4 Carbine? The M4 Carbine is a lightweight, gas-operated assault rifle chambered for the 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge. Developed from the AR-15 platform designed by firearms engineer Eugene Stoner, the M4 is essentially a shorter and more compact version of the M16 rifle. First introduced into US military service in the 1990s, the weapon was designed to provide soldiers with greater mobility while retaining the accuracy and firepower of a standard infantry rifle. Today, it is used by the US Army, Marine Corps, Special Operations forces and numerous allied militaries around the world. Key Specifications The M4 is designed to balance portability with combat effectiveness, making it suitable for both close-quarters combat and medium-range engagements. Caliber: 5.56×45mm NATO Barrel Length: 14.5 inches Weight: Approximately 6.4 pounds unloaded Operating System: Gas-operated, rotating bolt Rate of Fire: 700–950 rounds per minute Effective Range: Up to 500 metres against point targets Its collapsible stock and compact design make it significantly easier to carry and manoeuvre than the longer M16 rifle.
Why The M4 Is So Popular One of the M4’s defining features is its modular design. The rifle can be easily customised with optics, laser sights, flashlights, suppressors and under-barrel grenade launchers. Its rail system allows soldiers to quickly adapt the weapon for different missions, whether conducting urban operations, night missions or long-range engagements. The rifle also uses a direct-impingement gas system, which helps reduce weight and recoil, although it requires regular maintenance to prevent carbon buildup. Who Makes The M4? The M4 was originally developed and manufactured by Colt Defense in the United States. However, because the US government owns the technical data package, other manufacturers have also produced the rifle under military contracts. Major producers include Colt, FN America and Remington, which have supplied M4 variants to the US military and allied nations.
