At least fifteen Indian tourists lost their lives after a speedboat capsized off the southern island of Phu Quoc in Vietnam. The vessel, operated by a local company, was carrying thirty-six people, including thirty-two Indian nationals, when it overturned about four hundred meters into the sea while travelling from Hon May Rut Island to An Thoi port. Twenty-one people survived the accident, with locals performing CPR on the rescued tourists.
Initial reports indicate that adverse weather conditions, including rough seas and strong winds, caused the speeding boat to capsize. The Indian embassy in Vietnam is monitoring the situation and has established emergency response centres in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to assist affected families. Authorities in Andhra Pradesh are also collecting data to identify victims from the state. Local police and military personnel have been deployed for ongoing search and rescue operations, while an investigation is underway to determine if the boat operator followed safety regulations.
