Amid growing maritime security concerns in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia, the Indian Navy has bolstered its strength by commissioning the stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri at the Visakhapatnam dockyard. Designed indigenously by the Warship Design Bureau, it is the sixth vessel under Project 17A, boasting over 75 percent indigenous content.
The warship is equipped with advanced weapons and sensors, including surface-to-surface missiles, long-range surface-to-air missiles, and a comprehensive anti-submarine warfare system. Capable of multidimensional operations, the frigate enhances India's maritime surveillance, long-range deployment, and power projection capabilities. This induction marks a significant milestone in India's indigenous shipbuilding efforts, ensuring sustained presence and readiness in an unpredictable geopolitical environment.
