Two teenagers were swept away in a swollen river in Bijnor district as heavy rains lashed parts of Uttar Pradesh, officials said. The incident took place on Friday when three teenage boys went to bathe in the Malan river, which was already in spate due to sustained downpour. According to eyewitnesses, the trio jumped into the river from a bridge and were trying to swim underneath it when they got caught in the strong currents.
While one of them managed to save himself by swimming to safety, the other two were swept away. Read Full Story The scene sparked panic and a crowd soon gathered on the bridge. Due to continuous rainfall over the past two days, the river's water level had risen significantly above normal. People present at the scene said that one of the three teenagers remained calm and, after a determined struggle, managed to save his life by swimming to the riverbank.
However, the other two boys disappeared in the fast-flowing stream within seconds, they added. Police and administration officials reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident. A rescue operation, with assistance from locals, was subsequently launched to locate the two missing boys. The search continued throughout the evening in the river and surrounding areas. According to the last update received, there was still no trace of either teenager, and the search operation was ongoing.
Following the incident, the administration once again appealed to the public to stay away from swollen rivers, canals, and other water bodies during the monsoon season. Parents have been urged to prevent children and teenagers from visiting such locations, as it is difficult to judge the strength of fast-flowing water.
