This follows the approval of a new extension called Metro Line 5A, which adds another 11.83 km to the original 22.38 km project, according to Mid-day.
The total bill? Rs 18,130 crore. Where Exactly Will It Run? The full corridor will connect Thane to Kalyan and Ulhasnagar, passing through Bhiwandi — one of Asia’s largest textile and warehousing hubs. Think of it as a spine running through the eastern belt of MMR, linking areas that have long been underserved by fast public transport. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who is also MMRDA Chairman, described the corridor as a “powerful mobility link" that will serve lakhs of workers, traders, and citizens across the eastern corridor. MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee said the project would be central to the authority’s ‘Mumbai in Minutes’ initiative — an ambitious plan to dramatically cut travel time across the region.
