Delhi Court Issues Notice To Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Over Remarks On ‘Miya Muslims’ Published By, Last Updated: May 28, 2026, 16:48 IST Delhi court issues notice to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on activist Harsh Mander plea seeking FIR over alleged provocative remarks on Miya Muslims. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. (PTI) A Delhi court has issued a notice to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on a plea seeking registration of an FIR against him over his alleged “provocative" remarks concerning “Miya Muslims". The notice was issued by Additional Sessions Judge Sonu Agnihotri while hearing a revision petition filed by activist Harsh Mander challenging an earlier magistrate court order that had refused to direct police to lodge an FIR against the BJP leader.
According to the court order dated May 26, the petitioner’s counsel referred to the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on Zero FIR and E-FIR while arguing the matter before the court. “In view of the submissions made by the counsel for the petitioner, issue notice of revision petition to the respondents on filing of appropriate reply for July 15, 2026," the court said in its order. The revision petition challenges the April 20 decision of the magistrate court, which had declined to order registration of an FIR against Sarma over the controversial remarks.
Harsh Mander has alleged that the Assam Chief Minister’s comments targeting “Miya Muslims" were inflammatory and warranted criminal action. The term “Miya" is commonly used to refer to Bengali-origin Muslims in Assam and has remained politically sensitive in the state amid debates around identity, migration and citizenship. The matter will next be heard on July 15.
