(Reuters photo) The United States has given Iran 24 hours to publicly commit to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and stopping attacks on commercial ships, according to an Axios report. Washington warned that failure to do so would bring “serious consequences", adding that contingency plans are already in place if diplomacy fails. “The message has been conveyed directly and through regional mediators," the report said, citing US officials. One official warned, “If it is not their position [tomorrow], it is not gonna be a great day for them." US demands public commitment According to Axios, the Trump administration wants Iran to publicly declare that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open for commercial shipping and pledge to end attacks on merchant vessels.
“We want them to publicly say that they will stop shooting at ships and explicitly, or at least implicitly, acknowledge that they screwed up," one US official was quoted as saying. The official added that Washington expects Iran to announce that all shipping channels through the strait will remain open and toll-free. According to the report, US officials believe Iran violated last month’s memorandum of understanding by targeting commercial ships, leading to two rounds of US retaliatory strikes. Oman talks in focus Iranian and Omani officials are expected to meet in Muscat on Saturday, with Washington hoping Tehran will reaffirm freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to travel to Oman for talks focused on the waterway and shipping safety.
Iranian state media said the visit is “continuation of the consultations that we started with Oman over the past one or two months". The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes, remains a major source of contention between Washington and Tehran, which effectively closed the strategic waterway in response to the war launched by the United States and Israel in late February.
