A US federal indictment has accused a jailed gangster and his close associate of orchestrating the assassination of a Khalistani separatist in Canada. The charges, part of a wider international crackdown on transnational organised crime named Operation Hardball, allege the gangster directed the murder from prison using smuggled mobile phones, while his associate supervised North American operations.
The assassination had previously triggered a major diplomatic crisis after Canadian allegations of a possible link to Indian agents. However, Canadian police now state that their current organised crime investigation has found no evidence linking the Indian government to the charges under this operation. The transnational syndicate is allegedly involved in murder, extortion, and drug trafficking across continents.
