According to Fire Control officials, a distress call was received at around 4.20 p.m., following which seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
Fire-fighters were engaged in efforts to bring the blaze under control, with operations still underway. The fire sent thick plumes of smoke into the sky, alarming residents and commuters on the busy stretch. A student, who was appearing for an examination at a private educational institute nearby, said the flames could be seen rising up to the fourth floor of the building.
Preliminary probe suggested that the fire may have been triggered in second-hand cars or decorative material warehouses in the area and quickly spread to huts and other tin structures near the Musi riverbed. The possibility of fire originating from the garbage pile due to careless smoking is also being examined. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire, the Fire department said.
Meanwhile, the Hyderabad traffic police issued an alert. “Due to a fire accident at the Musi River Bed behind Chaderghat Police Station (L&O), vehicular movement is currently slow from Chaderghat Circle towards Chaderghat X Roads,” the police said. Traffic personnel have been deployed to manage the situation on ground.
