Mamata Banerjee-Led TMC Moves Calcutta HC Seeking Permission For July 21 Martyrs' Day Rally Published By, Last Updated: July 10, 2026, 23:14 IST The Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction has moved the Calcutta High Court after Kolkata Police kept its request to hold the July 21 Martyrs' Day rally at Esplanade pending. Rapid Read News18 The Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking permission to hold its annual July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally at its traditional venue in front of Victoria House at Esplanade. The petition, filed on Friday, challenges the prohibitory orders imposed by Kolkata Police under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The party has urged the court to allow the rally to be held at the same location where it has organised the event every year. Representing the Mamata Banerjee-led faction, lawyer Sirsanya Banerjee said the party had already submitted an application to the police seeking permission for the rally. However, the request has remained pending, prompting the party to move the high court. According to the petition, the TMC has requested the High Court to direct that the rally be allowed at Victoria House on July 21, as its application for permission remains pending with the Kolkata Police.
The matter is likely to be heard next week by the single bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya. Meanwhile, a dissident TMC faction led by MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, who is also the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, has also announced plans to hold a Martyrs’ Day rally on July 21. The dissident group came into existence after the West Bengal Assembly election results were declared on May 4, setting the stage for separate programmes by the two rival factions on the same day.
