While the final score suggested a comfortable win against UP, Delhi had to work hard as the former pushed them in almost every contest. The Prometheans struck first as Manav Thakkar edged past Egypt’s Youssef Abdelaziz 2-1, but Delhi’s Maria Xiao restored parity by registering an identical 2-1 win against Australia’s Yangzi Liu.
The turning point came in the mixed doubles contest, where Sathiyan and Maria outclassed Manav and Yangzi in straight games (11-9, 11-7, 11-5), handing Delhi a commanding 6-3 advantage. Sathiyan then overcame Germany’s Ricardo Walter 2-1 to extend Delhi’s lead. Although Sayali Wani produced a spirited comeback to edge past Divyanshi Bhowmick 9-11, 11-5, 11-10 in the final match, Delhi sealed the opening tie of the day with a 9-6 win. HVR Kolkata Thunder Blades, however, had to work much harder for their win against the PBG Pune Jaguars. Locked in a closely contested battle, the tie went down to the final match, where Taneesha Kotecha’s victory over Diya Chitale in the opening two games handed Kolkata an unassailable 8-6 lead. Earlier, Snehit Suravajjula handed Pune a 2-1 advantage with an upset victory over fellow Indian Ankur Bhattacharjee.
But Singapore’s Zeng Jian restored parity for Kolkata, beating Prithika Pavade by an identical 2-1 margin to level the tie at 3-all. Snehit and Prithika took the opening mixed doubles game 11-7 against Kolkata’s Eduard Ionescu and Ayhika Mukherjee. But the Kolkata pair fought back, winning the next two games 11-10 and 11-6 to edge their team into a slender 5-4 lead. Ionescu made a bright start by taking the opening game against Egypt’s Omar Assar, but the higher-ranked Assar responded to win the next two games and level the overall tie at 6-6. Taneesha then held her nerve, winning the first two games against Diya to seal the contest in Kolkata’s favour. A consolation win for the latter meant the Thunderblades won the tie, a close 8-7.
