BIS seizes over 1.5 kg of non-hallmarked gold jewellery in Secunderabad

Officials of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Hyderabad office, seized over 1.5 kilograms of non-hallmarked gold jewellery items during a search and seizure operation at a jewellery shop in Pot Market, Secunderabad, on Friday, for violating the mandatory hallmarking provisions under the BIS Act, 2016. The raid was conducted by a team from the BIS Hyderabad Branch Office led by Deputy Directors Kavin K.
and Vijayraj Barbar. During the inspection, officials found gold jewellery being offered for sale without the mandatory BIS hallmark, which is required for the sale of gold jewellery in the country. According to the BIS, the seized stock comprised 34 gold rings weighing 164.26 grams, 27 necklaces weighing 797.07 grams, six bangles weighing 57.03 grams, 17 chains weighing 412.72 grams and 27 pairs of earrings weighing 122.86 grams.
The agency said further action has been initiated against the establishment under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016. The BIS said it continues to carry out market surveillance and enforcement drives to safeguard consumer interests
and ensure compliance with statutory hallmarking requirements. The agency advised consumers to verify the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number of gold jewellery through the BIS Care mobile app before making purchases, and to insist on proper invoices.
