The Calcutta High Court on Friday (July 10, 2026) directed Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee to submit his voice sample to a judicial magistrate by July 15 in a case involving alleged intimidating comments he made during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign. Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya expressed his dissatisfaction over Mr. Banerjee’s non-appearance in providing his voice sample to the police in the ongoing case. “When will you appear to give your voice sample? Otherwise, I will recall this order [to give interim protection against coercive action]. I will prepone the hearing. There should be a limit to everything. I have already given protection subject to cooperation.
I will withdraw the protection,” Justice Bhattacharyya said. The court directed Mr. Banerjee to appear before the Bidhannagar Magistrate Court at 12 noon on July 15, to officially record his voice sample without any further delay. The judge also added that the Diamond Harbour MP is bound to cooperate with the investigation. Banerjee counsel asked the court to provide protection against “egg pelting” action. The court directed the police to ensure that such attacks do not take place on Mr. Banerjee when he is appearing before the court or the investigating agency. Multi-fold trouble Meanwhile, trouble has also cropped up for Mr. Banerjee on other fronts.
The Lok Sabha member had initiated ‘Sebaashray’, a flagship healthcare programme during the Trinamool government, in his Diamond Harbour constituency. However, multiple allegations have come to the fore where people have complained of medical negligence and usage of unauthorised medical equipment. “My mother’s leg had to be amputated due to wrong treatment and medical negligence,” alleged Soumyadeep Biswas, one of the complainants who has filed a police complaint. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Abhijit Das said that the local Trinamool leaders used to run a racket around the Sebaashray medical camp. “That is why we filed an FIR against them,” Mr. Das said.
The Trinamool MP has found himself embroiled in multi-fold trouble with the police and investigating agencies after the party’s loss in the elections. He has been brought in for questioning in an alleged signature forgery case. This controversy led to a major fracture in the party, with a majority of the Trinamool MLAs forming a new faction and filing a formal complaint against the issue to the Assembly Speaker. An FIR was registered against Mr. Banerjee. He was summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and questioned for hours in relation to this case.
