The national capital and NCR region experienced heavy rainfall on 9 July, with Safdarjung recording 72.6 millimetres of rain in 24 hours. This marked the second-highest rainfall recorded on this day in sixteen years. The rainfall led to widespread waterlogging, traffic jams, and infrastructural damage, including a sinkhole in Ghaziabad and a building collapse in Rohini. Analysis of rainfall data from 2011 to 2025 shows Delhi's monsoon has become concentrated, with 51 percent of July days recording no rain and 70 percent of this month's rainfall occurring in a single day.
Experts emphasise the need to upgrade stormwater drainage and urban infrastructure to handle shorter, more intense rainfall spells.
