The Centre has tightened regulations on the sale of alcohol-based oral medications to curb misuse and enhance oversight. Under the new rules, oral medications containing more than twelve percent ethyl alcohol in bottles larger than thirty millilitres, including certain cough syrups, will no longer be available over the counter.
These medicines will be placed under the strict Schedule H1 category, requiring pharmacies to maintain detailed sales records and follow enhanced monitoring norms. While the notification has been issued, a si month transition period has been provided for pharmacies to align with the revised regulatory framework.
