Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Friday inaugurated the first electric vehicle charging stations in the Union territory, calling the move a major step towards its goal of becoming carbon-neutral. He also urged people to adopt electric vehicles for a cleaner and more sustainable future. The charging network has been launched to support electric mobility in Ladakh by offering charging facilities for both residents and tourists travelling across the high-altitude region. Officials said the initiative is aimed at encouraging wider use of EVs while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Officials said a sixth charging station near Magnetic Hill in Leh is in the final stages of completion. According to officials, each charging station has two fast-charging guns and can charge electric vehicles up to 80 per cent in 30 minutes to one hour. The facilities also have fire safety measures and emergency shutdown systems. Speaking at the inauguration, Saxena described the launch as a historic milestone in Ladakh's shift towards clean energy and sustainable transport.
He said the initiative was in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of making Ladakh a carbon-neutral region through greater use of clean energy, while preserving its fragile Himalayan ecosystem and cutting reliance on fossil fuels. "The inauguration of these EV charging stations reflects our unwavering commitment to clean energy, sustainable mobility and environmentally responsible development. Ladakh's fragile ecology demands that we adopt technologies that minimise pollution and reduce carbon emissions," the LG said. Appealing to the people of Ladakh to embrace electric mobility, Saxena urged them to gradually replace petrol and diesel vehicles with electric vehicles.
He said such a transition would help reduce pollution and protect the Union territory's ecological heritage. Overall, the new charging stations mark the start of Ladakh's EV infrastructure network, with the administration presenting it as part of a wider push for cleaner transport and a carbon-neutral future.
