Most people throw away aluminium foil after cooking, but it may deserve a second use. Cleaning experts say a crumpled ball of aluminium foil can help remove hard water stains and limescale from metal taps, restoring much of their shine without using harsh cleaning products. The hack is simple, inexpensive and makes use of something that would otherwise end up in the bin. It works particularly well on chrome and stainless steel fixtures affected by everyday mineral deposits. Read Full Story HOW DOES THE TRICK WORK? Hard water contains minerals such as calcium and magnesium. When the water dries, it leaves behind a white, chalky layer known as limescale.
Over time, this build-up can make taps and other metal fixtures look dull. A loosely crumpled ball of aluminium foil acts as a gentle scrubbing pad. Its texture helps lift surface deposits without being as abrasive as steel wool. Experts also say the cleaning effect can improve when the foil is damp or used with a little white vinegar. HOW TO USE ALUMINIUM FOIL ON TAPS The process is straightforward Tear off a small piece of aluminium foil and crumple it into a loose ball. Wet the foil with water or dip it in a little white vinegar.
Gently rub the stained areas in circular motions. Rinse the tap with clean water. Dry it with a soft microfibre cloth to help prevent new water spots. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND The hack works best on light to moderate hard water stains and is most suitable for chrome, stainless steel and similar metal surfaces. If the limescale is very thick, soaking the area with white vinegar before scrubbing may give better results. Experts also advise testing the method on a small hidden area first if your tap has a matte, brushed or speciality coating, as delicate finishes could become dull.
Wearing gloves while cleaning can also improve grip and protect your hands.
