Rapid Read An image to represent a crime scene (PTI) A 70-year-old man and his grandson were allegedly hacked to death in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district in what police believe is a fallout of a long-running land dispute with neighbours. The double murder took place in Hevati Dihva village under the Pavai police station limits during the early hours of Friday.
According to police, Jagdamba Prasad Yadav was sleeping near a tubewell when unidentified attackers allegedly slit his throat with an axe around 1.30 am. The assailants then allegedly made their way to the family’s house, where Jagdamba Prasad’s 25-year-old grandson, Shrivanshu Yadav, alias Ankit, was asleep on the verandah. He was attacked with the same weapon and left critically injured. Superintendent of Police Dr Anil Kumar said Ankit’s grandmother, Phoolkumari, heard a noise during the night and called out to him. When there was no response, she woke up other family members sleeping inside the house. They found Ankit seriously injured and rushed him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Later, when relatives went to the tubewell to check on Jagdamba Prasad, they discovered his body. Senior police officials, along with a forensic team and a dog squad, inspected the crime scene as part of the investigation. Police said the axe allegedly used in the killings was recovered from a sugarcane field about 100 metres from the spot. According to police, Ankit’s brother, Shiv Kumar Yadav, has alleged that the murders were the result of an ongoing land dispute and old enmity with neighbours. A case has been registered based on the family’s complaint. Police said several teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused, adding that the investigation is progressing on all fronts.
