Thane Doctor Assault Case: Shiv Sena Corporator Sent To Three-Day Police Custody Published By, Last Updated: July 10, 2026, 15:37 IST According to police, the dispute arose after doctors allegedly advised shifting a pregnant woman to another hospital due to a lack of NICU beds. Rapid Read The assault was reported on Monday evening. The Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) corporator who allegedly assaulted doctors and nurses inside a hospital in Maharashtra’s Thane district has been remanded to three-day police custody on Friday. The incident, involving corporator Ramesh Mhatre, took place at the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC)-run Shastri Nagar Hospital on Monday evening. Further, the Shiv Sena has issued a show cause notice to Mhatre. Mhatre was arrested on Wednesday evening after he surrendered to the police. The corporator then underwent a medical examination.
The same day, three of his associates were also arrested in connection with the incident, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four. Mhatre was taken to Thane Civil Hospital after he faced several health issues following his arrest, according to the Dombivli Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Suhas Hemade. The arrests came hours after the Shiv Sena distanced itself from the incident. Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Eknath Shinde vowed strict action against the accused, saying no one involved in the assault would be shielded and warning that those found guilty would face disciplinary action. He said that Mhatre should apologise if he had behaved inappropriately with the doctors. Before surrendering, Mhatre issued his first public statement after he was named an accused. While expressing regret over the altercation, he denied allegations that he assaulted a female doctor.
“I regret the physical altercation that took place, but I did not raise my hand against the female doctor. The CCTV footage shows only one camera angle," he stated. According to Mhatre, the doctor was on a phone call when he tried to raise the concerns of a patient’s family. He claimed he merely “tapped" her hand to get her attention. “She was on the phone and not listening to our grievances, so I tapped her hand. We follow Balasaheb’s teachings. We have never raised a hand against women and never will," he said, adding that shortcomings in the hospital’s functioning had led to the incident. According to police, the dispute stemmed from the treatment of a pregnant woman, with doctors allegedly advising that she be shifted to another hospital as NICU beds at the facility were fully occupied.
