The Bihar government will dismiss more than 3,000 teachers accused of securing government jobs using fake degrees and forged educational certificates, Education Minister Mithilesh Tiwary announced on Friday. The action follows a detailed investigation by the state Vigilance Bureau into teacher recruitment carried out between 2006 and 2015. The Vigilance Bureau's probe allegedly uncovered large-scale irregularities, including the use of fake academic institutions and forged educational documents to obtain teaching posts.
Read Full Story Based on the findings, several FIRs have been registered against the accused teachers, who have been named in criminal cases. Addressing reporters, Tiwary said the Education Department had been directed to initiate strict action against all those found to have obtained appointments fraudulently. "The decision has been taken following a detailed investigation conducted by the state Vigilance Bureau into recruitment carried out between 2006 and 2015," he said, adding that the enquiry exposed widespread use of fake degrees and forged certificates during the recruitment process.
The minister said the government would not only dismiss the accused teachers but also initiate disciplinary proceedings against them. He added that the state would recover the salaries and honorariums paid to them during their tenure, along with applicable interest. Tiwary said the vigilance inquiry had been ordered by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and reiterated that both the Centre and the Bihar government follow a policy of "zero tolerance" towards corruption.
Officials said the investigation also found that some teachers had resigned before disciplinary proceedings could be initiated. They, too, will face departmental action, they added. The crackdown covers teachers allegedly appointed between 2006 and 2015 using fake or forged educational documents, with dismissals, criminal proceedings and recovery of government payments set to follow.
