Police Failure Or Political Pressure? (X) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, returning to Karur for the first time on Friday since last year’s stampede that claimed 41 lives, revived the controversy over the unfortunate event by questioning the role of the police and accusing the ruling DMK of politicising the tragedy. Speaking at the rally, the TVK chief said the tragedy continues to weigh heavily on him and insisted that several questions surrounding the incident remain unanswered. Without directly naming any officials, he suggested there had been pressure on the police on the day of the stampede and accused the ruling DMK of attempting to pin the blame on his party.
He framed his speech around two key issues—the role of the police in allowing the event to continue despite the crowd surge, and what he called the DMK’s efforts to politicise the tragedy. Q1. What Was The Role Of The Police? Vijay argued that the police had the authority to prevent the tragedy by cancelling the event if they believed the crowd had become unmanageable. They could have said there is overcrowding and could have cancelled the meeting. They had all the rights to cancel the meeting," he said. He alleged that instead of intervening, the police allowed the event to continue. “They didn’t do anything that day. They went out of their way to help us. I should have known something is wrong." Q2. DMK’s Hand? The TVK chief then raised a series of questions over the chain of command during the incident.
“Who do you think is responsible? Who put pressure [on the police]? Who gave the instructions that day?" he asked, while recalling that innocent children, women and others had lost their lives in the stampede. He is blaming us for this," Vijay said. Responding to criticism that he had left the venue after the stampede, Vijay rejected allegations that he had fled. “Opponents said I fled the place. I came to politics only to serve people. I won’t run away from the people of the state," he said. The remarks mark Vijay’s sharpest attack yet on the handling of the Karur stampede, with the Tamil Nadu chief minister alleging that the police failed to exercise their authority and suggesting there were political instructions behind the events of that day.
