'Who Gave The Orders That Day?’ Vijay Hints At Political Conspiracy In First Karur Visit Since Stampede Published By, Last Updated: July 10, 2026, 12:54 IST Tamil Nadu CM Vijay hints at political conspiracy in Karur stampede that killed 41, questioning authorities' inaction despite overcrowding. File image of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK chief Vijay. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK chief Vijay on Friday hinted at a political conspiracy behind the deadly Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives, questioning why authorities did not cancel the public meeting despite allegedly being aware of overcrowding. Addressing supporters during his first visit to Karur since the tragedy, Vijay said he had endured one of the most painful moments of his political journey. “Even if a man reaches greater heights, they go through painful moments. It applies to me too. Karur is one such instance," he said. ‘Police Could Have Cancelled Karur Event’ Questioning the police’s handling of the event, Vijay claimed officials had the authority to call off the gathering if they believed the situation had become unsafe.
“After we finished the Namakkal venue, Karur police could have alerted us. They could have said there is overcrowding and could have cancelled the meeting. They had all the rights to cancel the meeting," he said. The chief minister alleged that instead of intervening, officials acted in a manner that later made him suspect there was more to the incident. “They didn’t do anything that day. They went out of their way to help us. I should have known something is wrong." Karur Stampede: A Political Conspiracy? Without naming anyone, Vijay suggested external pressure may have influenced the authorities’ actions. “Who do you think is responsible? Who put pressure and who gave instructions that day?" he asked. Recalling the tragedy, Vijay paid tribute to those who lost their lives. “Who all lost their lives that day? We lost innocent toddlers and kids and brothers and sisters," he said. ‘Won’t Run Away From People Of Tamil Nadu’ The TVK leader also responded to criticism over his decision to leave the venue after the stampede.
“I was criticised for leaving the venue. Opponents said I fled the place," he said, adding, “I came to politics only to serve people. I won’t run away from the people of the state." Taking aim at the ruling DMK, Vijay accused Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of politicising the incident. “Stalin sir is playing politics in this case. He is blaming us for this," he said. Shifting focus to corruption, Vijay alleged that political parties had amassed wealth in the name of party funds. “In the name of party funds, the parties looted money," he said. Referring to a recent Assembly session, he claimed his remarks on party finances had rattled the ruling party. “When I said party funds in the Assembly, we saw one party (DMK) leave the Assembly. Some parties are scared of us," Vijay said. Reiterating his party’s agenda, the chief minister said the government’s priority was to eliminate corruption and claimed that people had begun noticing a difference. “Our focus is to eradicate corruption. There are people who have come forward saying they don’t have to pay bribes anymore," he said.
