The Thiruvananthapuram City Cyber Crime Police have registered a case against a Facebook user for allegedly creating and circulating a fake poster in the name of senior Congress leader and former Kerala Speaker V.M. Sudheeran. According to the police, a Facebook account operating under the name ‘Mohammed Khaleel’ has come under scrutiny in the case.
The fabricated poster falsely attributed a statement to Mr. Sudheeran as criticising and insulting Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, and carried both their photos. The First Information Report states that the image was circulated with a deceptive caption, falsely attributed to Mr. Sudheeran, stating: “There is a lack of coordination among departments in Kerala.
The Chief Minister’s one-man show performance will not last much longer.” The post was purportedly intended to create hostility among the public and political groups, official sources said. The case has been registered under Sections 192 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause
a riot) and 336(3) (forgery for the purpose of cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, Section 66(c) (identity theft) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, and Section 120(o) (nuisance to any person through any means of communication) of the Kerala Police Act, 2011.
