Rapid Read (Representative image) A woman was arrested in Jharkhand’s Palamu district after she allegedly threw her two young daughters into a well and later jumped in herself following a domestic dispute, police said. While the woman was rescued by villagers, both children died in the incident. The incident took place on Wednesday night in Kanda village.
Police identified the accused as Sarita Devi, wife of Chhote Lal Prajapati, a local labourer. According to the preliminary investigation, an argument broke out between Sarita Devi and her husband on Wednesday evening. After the dispute, she allegedly picked up her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Dolly, who was sleeping in her grandmother’s lap, and threw her into a nearby well. She then allegedly threw her second daughter, four-year-old Priya, into the well, police said. Police said Sarita Devi also attempted to throw her third daughter, si year-old Sushma, into the well, but the child resisted and raised an alarm.
She then abandoned the attempt and jumped into the well herself. Hearing the child’s cries for help, villagers rushed to the spot and pulled Sarita Devi out of the well. However, the two younger children could not be saved. A local police official said an FIR has been registered in connection with the incident. Sarita Devi has been arrested, and authorities are in the process of remanding her into judicial custody. The bodies of the two children were sent for post-mortem examination, which was conducted on Thursday morning at Medinirai Medical College and Hospital. Police said the investigation into the dispute and the deaths is underway.
