Nine months after the tragic Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives and left hundreds injured, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay returned to the site to launch significant rehabilitation and development initiatives. During his visit, the Chief Minister handed over 32 government job appointment letters to the families of the victims and laid the foundation for development projects worth ₹1,700 crores, which are expected to generate over 13,500 jobs, including a non-leather footwear factory.
However, the move has ignited a political controversy. BJP state chief Nainar Nagendran slammed the visit as politically motivated, questioning the timing of the outreach. Furthermore, ally CPIM expressed reservations, demanding a comprehensive policy for the victims' families prior to job distribution. Elaborate security arrangements, including the deployment of 6,000 police personnel and QR code-based entry, were implemented to prevent any recurrence of the previous year's tragedy.
