‘First Become Expert Mother, Then IAS Officer’: UP Governor’s Convocation Message To Women Published By, Last Updated: July 10, 2026, 08:48 IST UP Governor Anandiben Patel urged women to be "expert mothers" before pursuing careers. She also raised concerns about drug trafficking near university hostels. Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel on Thursday said that women should first work towards becoming “expert mothers" before aspiring to become teachers and IAS officers. The governor, who was addressing students, parents and faculty at the 41st convocation of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU), said that a woman’s professional success should not come at the cost of family responsibilities, while emphasising family values, parental responsibility and character-building. The governor urged young women to pursue higher education and build their careers after marriage while also contributing to the well-being of their families and society.
“Whether you become an IAS officer or a teacher, first become an expert mother. Everyone should know how to cook the food prepared at home," Patel said. The governor also appealed to parents not to consider that their responsibility is complete after they have got their children admitted in schools or colleges. “Parents should know what their children are doing after they enter educational institutions. Even a small lapse in supervision can adversely affect their future," the governor said. Patel also raised concerns over alleged drug trafficking in and around university hostels, claiming that a monitoring team set up by the Jan Bhavan (formerly Raj Bhavan) had uncovered cases in which narcotics were allegedly being delivered through food delivery containers.
She said swift administrative action led to the dismantling of the network. Addressing the issue of women’s safety, Patel linked the increasing number of domestic violence cases and crimes against women to a decline in moral values, arguing that the purpose of education should extend beyond academic achievement. “If degrees are increasing but society continues to witness such crimes, it reflects the true state of our education. Moral values are as important as academic knowledge," she said. During the convocation ceremony, degrees were awarded to 1,07,713 students, with women securing nearly 82 per cent of the medals. Patel also inaugurated the digital distribution of degree certificates through DigiLocker, allowing more than 1.07 lakh graduates from the previous academic session to access their certificates electronically.
