The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered the immediate shutdown of Mumbai's iconic ice cream parlour, K. Rustom & Co., and suspended its licence after finding severe hygiene violations. During an inspection on 8th July, FDA officials reportedly discovered live rats, houseflies, and expired products at the popular Churchgate establishment in South Mumbai.
Additionally, authorities found that dairy products were stored at unsafe temperatures, food items lacked mandatory labelling, and food-handling staff lacked mandatory medical fitness certificates. This enforcement action was part of a larger, two-day statewide FDA drive targeting sixteen establishments, resulting in ten notices, suspended licences in Nagpur and Dhule, the seizure of banned food products, and one arrest.
