The area has long been associated with the 47th President of the US, Donald J Trump. “We have a President who lives in our backyard, we might as well honour him. People need to be honoured for the commitment they make to our country," said a woman, seen at the airport in a video posted by BBC.
The changing of the name of the airport cost $5.5 million, according to a report by Reuters. Authorities are expected to update signage and official records to reflect the new name. In an apparent bid to justify the name change, President Trump’s son Eric Trump said, speaking with Fox News, “I don’t think there’s anybody more synonymous with Palm Beach than Donald Trump in maybe all of Florida." The airport, reportedly, serves 8 to 8.6 million passengers each year. It is one of the key travel hubs in southern Florida. After Trump took office, as the President of the United States, for the second time, his name has replaced older names of a planned class of Navy warships, a visa-program for wealthy foreigners, a government-run prescription drug website, and federal savings account for children.
