(File pic/AFP) Signalling a definitive breakdown in communication with Pakistani authorities, the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has announced a grand “Long March" to Muzaffarabad on July 15. The decision comes after more than a month of self-imposed restraint and stalled negotiations, with the committee declaring that a mass public demonstration has now become entirely inevitable to secure basic civil and constitutional rights.
Speaking from Rawalakot, Umair Nazir, a core member of the committee, issued a fresh declaration urging citizens across the territory to accelerate their operational preparations. The leadership has extended an appeal to all sections of society, including the youth and elders, to join the July 15 caravan and amplify the message of resistance in every corner of the region. The core leadership emphasised that the committee had demonstrated immense patience over the past several weeks, repeatedly postponing scheduled demonstrations to allow room for peaceful mediation. Multiple formal offers for structured dialogue were presented to the administration in the wider public interest, yet every diplomatic outreach was systematically ignored or rejected by state authorities. Compounding the political impasse, the committee revealed that independent public figures and prominent personalities who attempted to step forward to mediate the crisis were barred from entering Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
This deliberate blocking of neutral interlocutors has further hardened the resolve of the movement, which has been pushing against an escalating administrative crackdown. The situational backdrop remains highly volatile, with daily sit-ins facing unyielding state resistance. According to the committee, relentless nocturnal raids on residential properties, incidents of vandalism by law enforcement, and arbitrary arrests of civil rights activists have continued unabated, resulting in several protesters being martyred over the past month. Despite the intensifying state pressure and heavy-handed tactics, the JAAC reiterated its commitment to keeping the agitation strictly non-violent. The organisers clarified that they remain prepared to make any necessary sacrifice but will under no circumstances retreat from their legitimate charter of public demands.
