The clips, some shared by Scope Report and others, show a multi-storey building in the city of Jinjiang engulfed in flames. Thick black smoke can be seen pouring out from several floors. In some visuals, the fire appears to move quickly across the structure, while later footage shows the building’s outer walls charred black and covered in white smoke.

The fire broke out at a factory owned by the Huiteng shoe company, according to the city’s fire department. Emergency teams rushed to the spot and managed to evacuate or rescue 213 people. However, 28 people lost their lives.

State broadcaster CCTV reported that two of them were declared dead after being taken to a hospital. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an “all-out" search and rescue effort. He also asked authorities to quickly investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
