In an interview, Michael Patrick Mulroy, former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, discussed the recent US strikes on 90 Iranian targets following incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. Analyzing the current US-Iran agreement, Mulroy stated, "It's essentially not a memorandum of understanding. It's a memorandum of misunderstanding, with both sides having wildly different interpretations." He explained that the US strikes aimed to degrade Iran's capability to close the strait, targeting coastal surveillance, radar sites, and ballistic missiles.
Mulroy noted that Iran views the Strait of Hormuz as its biggest leverage point and warned that Tehran could retaliate by targeting US military locations, Gulf allies' infrastructure, or utilizing Houthi proxies in Yemen to disrupt Red Sea trade. Addressing the broader regional conflict, he highlighted the role of Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon. Mulroy emphasized that if the proxy group ceased its attacks, the US could exert greater diplomatic pressure, noting, "If Hezbollah stopped attacking Israel, the United States would have much more leverage over Israel."
