Veteran Tollywood actor Prosenjit Chatterjee on Thursday clarified that his meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the state secretariat, Nabanna, was purely a courtesy call and had no political significance. According to Prosenjit, the discussion covered ways to strengthen the state's film ecosystem and address matters affecting the industry. He also expressed his desire to celebrate the birth anniversary of legendary actor Uttam Kumar in a grand and dignified manner in the coming years. Prosenjit said Uttam Kumar's contribution to Bengali cinema remains unparalleled and that commemorating his legacy through meaningful events would help preserve Bengal's rich cultural and cinematic heritage. The actor emphasised the need to promote Bengal's film industry and culture, stating that initiatives recognising iconic personalities and supporting cinema should receive greater attention.
NO POLITICAL AGENDA Prosenjit's visit to Nabanna had triggered speculation over a possible political move. However, the actor firmly denied any such plans, reiterating that the meeting was solely a courtesy interaction and centred on discussions related to the film industry and cultural initiatives. He maintained that there was no political agenda behind the meeting and said any future decision regarding a political career, if taken, would be announced publicly. The development comes after three former Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MPs โ Sushmita Dev, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Prakash Chik Baraik โ resigned from the party and joined the BJP.
Their induction has been welcomed by BJP leaders, who believe it will bolster the party's prospects ahead of the July 24 Rajya Sabha bypolls for the seats vacated by the trio. With the BJP enjoying a commanding majority in the Assembly and the TMC grappling with internal divisions, the party is widely expected to win all three seats, further strengthening its presence in the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal.
