For several weeks, the Middle East had experienced a tense but noticeable lull in direct US Iran clashes after Washington and Tehran signed a Pakistan and Qatar brokered memorandum of understanding to extend a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. That calm has now broken. US Central Command says it has carried out two consecutive nights of large‑scale strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, while Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claims retaliatory attacks on American bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.
At the same time, Iran is in the midst of days‑long funeral ceremonies for slain Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, turning each fresh exchange of fire into a politically charged message to mourning crowds demanding “revenge”.
