The government appealed to steel and cement manufacturers to partner with its flagship Indiramma housing programme by supplying construction material at concessional rates to help accelerate the construction of houses for the poor. At a meeting held at the Secretariat with representatives of steel, cement and other construction material industries, Revenue and Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy and Industries Minister Duddilla Sridhar Babu called upon the representatives of industries to become partners in the ambitious programme by reducing the prices of steel and cement for beneficiaries.
Ponguleti said the Indiramma housing scheme was not merely a housing initiative but a mission to provide dignity, social security and self-respect to economically weaker families. Representatives of the industries responded positively to the appeal and expressed willingness to cooperate with the government. The Ministers said the government had sanctioned 4.5 lakh Indiramma houses across the State, excluding Hyderabad, in the first phase. They stated that construction of nearly 85% of these houses had reached the slab stage, while the remaining houses were at various stages of construction.
The second phase envisages the sanction of 2.5 lakh houses across the State at the rate of 2,000 houses per Assembly constituency, besides one lakh houses in areas under the CURE programme. An additional 1,000 to 1,500 houses would be sanctioned for each tribal constituency. House allotments, they said, would continue in the third and fourth phases as well. The Ministers asserted that Telangana was the only State providing ₹5 lakh financial assistance with 100% subsidy for house construction, describing it as a model for the rest of the country.
Despite the significant financial burden, the government would continue releasing funds every Monday in a transparent, stage-wise manner based on construction progress, they said. Housing Secretary V.P. Gautham, Industries Department Special Secretary Krishna Aditya, TGIIC Managing Director Shashank and representatives of various industries attended the meeting.
