A three-year-old girl died after drowning in a waterlogged alley in Ghaziabad as sustained rain battered the Capital Region (NCR) on Thursday. The incident took place outside the toddler's home. Her family and other residents of the locality gathered along Highway-9 (NH-9) with her body in the aftermath of the accident, raising slogans against the local civic body and demanding strict action in the matter. Read Full Story According to Ram Kumar, a local resident, nearly three feet of water had accumulated in the lane where the child drowned.
He said the girl's body was found four hours after she drowned. Kumar alleged that waterlogging in the area became worse after widening work was carried out on the nearby stretch of NH-9. He claimed that formal representation regarding the issue has been made to the municipal corporation in the past multiple times. However, no action has been taken by the authorities yet, Kumar said. The incessant rain in NCR led to widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls and civic disruptions in several parts of Ghaziabad and adjoining Noida. The Shastri Nagar area of Ghaziabad witnessed severe flooding, with submerged roads slowing traffic and leaving commuters stranded for hours.
ROAD CAVES IN A section of a road in the Vasundhara Sector 13 area of Ghaziabad caved in beside an under-construction basement amid the continuous rain, sending a parked car and a scooter into the pit. A nearby electricity pole also tilted into the crater. While no one was injured, both vehicles were extensively damaged. They belonged to the same man, who alleged that a builder had excavated nearly 20 feet for a basement without adequate safety arrangements and that the road suddenly gave way towards the excavation around 8 am due to the sustained downpour.
