Distinguished scientific and academic leader Srinivasa Murty Srinivasula took charge as the fourth director of IISER Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday (July 9, 2026). Originally hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Prof. Murty Srinivasula obtained his PhD degree from Banaras Hindu University in 1993. He is presently a Professor (HAG – Higher Administrative Grade) at IISER Thiruvananthapuram and has served the institute in several administrative leadership roles for over a decade, including as Deputy Director, Registrar, Dean (Administration), Dean of Student Welfare, and Chairman of the School of Biology.
Prior to joining IISER Thiruvananthapuram in 2012, he spent over 18 years at leading research institutions in the United States of America, including a nine-year tenure as Principal Investigator at the Cancer Centre, Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland. An accomplished biologist, his research has provided important insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying diverse physiological processes, ranging from programmed cell death (apoptosis) to cell survival.
His scientific contributions have received widespread recognition, with his work being cited more than 57,000 times in the scientific literature. He is a recipient of the Sidney Kimmel Scholar Award and a Special Fellow of
the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. His laboratory, the Laboratory of Immune Cell Biology–LICB at IISER Thiruvananthapuram, continues to investigate fundamental mechanisms of cell signalling, with particular emphasis on organelle homeostasis, ubiquitin signalling and host–pathogen interactions.
