The staff of all gram panchayats in Mysuru taluk participated in a cleanliness drive on Thursday to create awareness about keeping Chamundi Hills free of plastic during the Ashada month. The cleanliness drive organised jointly by Chamundi Hill Gram Panchayat and Mysuru Taluk Panchayat under the leadership of Mysuru Taluk Panchayat Executive Officer C. Krishna covered the stretch from the foothills to Chamundeshwari Temple atop the hills. The participants in the cleanliness drive through shramdaan (or voluntary community service) swept the steps, cleared thorny bushes and collected and disposed off plastic covers, water bottles and other environmentally harmful waste discarded along the route.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Krishna said that it was customary for thousands of devotees to climb the steps and offer prayers to Goddess Chamundeshwari during the Ashada month. “In view of the large influx of pilgrims, the Taluk Panchayat had organised the cleanliness drive with the participation of sanitation workers, officials and staff from all gram panchayats to spread awareness about keeping the hill free of environmentally harmful plastic waste,” he said. Chamundi Hill Gram Panchayat Development Officer K. Rukmangada appealed to the public to join hands in preserving the hill’s identity and natural beauty by keeping it free of plastic.
The devotees visiting the temple have been requested not to bring or litter plastic items on the hill. Special Intensive Revision Meanwhile, an awareness rally on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls was also conducted at Chamundi Hills to educate devotees, tourists and the general public. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Krishna said that no eligible voter should be deprived of the right to vote. He appealed to the public to cooperate with Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and other staff during their house-to-house visits. He said help and facilitation centres had been opened in every gram panchayat, where people could obtain information, application forms and other assistance, adding that officials would respond promptly to public queries.
Chamundi Hill Gram Panchayat Administrator Y.N. Mamatha, Taluk Panchayat staff, Panchayat Development Officers, Secretaries, and sanitation workers from all gram panchayats participated in the cleanliness drive.
