A deadly landslide in Kaladi near Meppadi in Kerala's Wayanad district has claimed five lives and left three people missing, reviving memories of the massive tragedy in the region two years ago. The disaster has sparked intense debate over the ongoing tunnel road project connecting Kozhikode and Wayanad. While the project aims to reduce travel distance by 70 kilometres and ease medical emergencies, experts and residents have raised alarms over constructing in ecologically sensitive zones using the soil nailing method.
The current UDF government, which previously opposed the project initiated by the LDF government, allowed construction to continue after coming to power. Authorities have labelled the landslide a manmade disaster, blaming the construction company for failing to remove accumulated mud, an accusation the firm denies. A subcommittee will probe the incident to determine the project's future. The tragedy highlights a larger, pan-India issue of extreme weather events clashing with unchecked development, unstable slopes, and poor infrastructure planning.
