Rapid Read Image Credits: PIB India India has approved its first hydrogen powered train for operations on the Jind Sonipat section in Haryana, marking a significant step towards clean and sustainable rail transport. Indian Railways on Wednesday cleared the introduction of the 10 coach hydrogen fuel cell based trainset for the route. The train will run on a 1,200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system and is expected to begin operations soon. It will operate at a maximum speed of 75 kmph. Route, Technology And Rollout The hydrogen powered train will run on the Jind Sonipat route in Haryana.
Unlike conventional trains, it will generate electricity onboard through hydrogen fuel cells. The technology works through a chemical reaction using hydrogen, with water vapour being the only emission released during the process. This makes it a cleaner alternative to diesel based transport systems. To support the project, an indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been developed at Jind. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has granted approval for the facility. Railway officials said trained technical staff will accompany the train during the initial phase of operations to ensure smooth functioning and monitor safety systems. India Joins Select Nations With this move, India joins countries such as Germany, Japan, China and the United States that are exploring hydrogen powered rail transport. According to Indian Railways, the project reflects its focus on innovation, energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable transportation.
Officials added that the initiative is also aligned with India’s clean energy targets and net zero carbon emission goals. Safety Measures In Place As hydrogen rail technology is still at a developing stage globally, Indian Railways has introduced several safety and operational measures. These include round the clock monitoring of the hydrogen refuelling system, regular inspection and maintenance schedules, and deployment of trained and certified personnel for critical operations. Hydrogen leak detectors, flame detectors and other safety sensors have also been installed at the hydrogen production, storage and dispensing facility. Officials said regular inspections and cleaning will be carried out to prevent dust accumulation and maintain safety standards. Hydrogen Push Beyond Railways The government has also been promoting hydrogen powered public transport in other sectors. Earlier this month, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) launched the country’s first hydrogen powered shuttle bus service in the Central Vista area of New Delhi.
Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) provided two hydrogen fuelled buses for the service. Each bus has a seating capacity of 35 passengers and is equipped with GPS tracking and CCTV systems for monitoring, passenger safety and route management.
