Congress leader Siddaramaiah on Thursday formally resigned as Karnataka chief minister, marking a major leadership transition in the state. Shortly after submitting his resignation, Siddaramaiah told reporters that he had submitted his resignation at Lok Bhavan. Siddaramaiah submitted his resignation to Prabhu Shankar, Special Secretary to the Karnataka Governor. Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, who is out of the state, is returning tonight. So, I submitted the resignation to his office," he said. Siddaramaiah said he had repeatedly maintained that he would step down whenever directed by the Congress high command, and added that his resignation came in line with the party leadership’s instructions.

I am fully confident that the Governor will accept it when he comes because it has to be done according to the Constitution…We are in the absolute majority. Therefore, it is constitutional that the Chief Minister should be allowed (to form a government)." Siddaramaiah Expresses Gratitude To Congress leaders He further expressed his gratitude to Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi for giving him the opportunity. “I would like to express my immense gratitude to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, who have provided this opportunity," Siddaramaiah said. “I joined Congress in 2006. All party workers and leaders, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, have shown love and support to me. They have given me opportunities. I thank them all," he added. Siddaramaiah To Meet Rahul Gandhi Sources said Siddaramaiah is expected to meet Rahul Gandhi later on Thursday, during which a decision is likely to be taken regarding the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting.

Sources added that no final decision has yet been taken on how many ministers will take the oath, though Rahul Gandhi is also likely to attend the ceremony. DK Shivakumar To Become Karnataka’s Next CM? Sources have suggested that DK Shivakumar is likely to become the next chief minister of Karnataka, and he is expected to take an oath this weekend. Amid reports of Shivakumar taking over as the next CM, his supporters celebrated in Ramanagara on Wednesday by shouting slogans, bursting crackers and distributing sweets. Since the Congress formed the government in Karnataka, political circles have remained abuzz with speculation over a possible rotational chief ministership arrangement between Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar.
While the party leadership has never publicly confirmed any power-sharing pact, rumours of a “2.5-year CM formula" have resurfaced repeatedly, especially during key meetings between Karnataka leaders and the Congress high command in Delhi.
