The minor was last seen on Wednesday morning, and her family became concerned when she failed to return. A search was launched, and her body was eventually discovered on a forested hillock close to her home. Police believe the suspect lured the girl to accompany him to the isolated location, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her before killing her.
The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to establish further details. Sribhumi Additional Superintendent of Police Trinayan Bhuyan said initial findings pointed to rape and murder, adding that an investigation had been launched, according to a report by NDTV. Residents Allegedly Catch Suspect Before Police Arrest According to sources cited by the outlet, people in the area managed to catch the 22-year-old suspect and later handed him over to the police. The crime also triggered protests over accusations that local police did not respond quickly enough. Residents alleged that despite alerting personnel at the Madanmohan Patrol Post, situated around 300 metres from the crime scene, officers failed to arrive promptly. The anger spilled onto the Chargola-Hailakandi road, where residents staged a blockade and sought immediate action in the case. They also demanded accountability over the alleged delay by police.
Additional forces were subsequently sent from the district headquarters to restore order. Action Ordered Over Alleged Delay In Police Response Senior officers later initiated action against Mohan Lal Das, the officer in charge of the Madanmohan Patrol Post, over allegations of negligence. Police said the arrested man was being questioned as investigators worked to establish the complete sequence of events. “We have arrested the accused and started our interrogation. The accused took the minor to the forest area by luring her. The minor was raped, and at last she was murdered by the accused. We have started an investigation and will take all possible steps so that the accused gets stringent punishment," Bhuyan was quoted as saying by NDTV. Authorities have registered a case, and the investigation remains underway.
