India-backed Chabahar Port in Iran is hit by U.S. military strikes US-Iran War: The United States on Thursday launched airstrikes targeting key facilities at Iran’s strategic port of Chabahar, hours after US President Donald Trump warned Tehran that further attacks would be met with an even stronger response. Explosions were reported across Chabahar, with Iranian state media reporting power outages in parts of the city. Residents said multiple blasts were heard as emergency services responded to the affected areas. Iranian media described it as the first strike on the strategic port since the ceasefire announced in April.

State broadcaster IRIB reported that several projectiles struck the Shahid Beheshti dock, the Kalantari dock and the maritime traffic control tower. Residents reported hearing around 10 explosions across Chabahar and the neighbouring city of Konarak. The strikes also disrupted electricity supplies, with nearly half of Chabahar losing power. The provincial electricity chief for Sistan and Baluchestan said three power lines had been cut during the attack, adding that two had already been restored while work was underway to reconnect the third.
The reported strike on its maritime traffic control tower is significant because the facility manages the movement of ships entering and leaving the port. Located on the Gulf of Oman just outside the Strait of Hormuz, Chabahar is Iran’s only ocean-facing port and serves as a critical maritime gateway. The overnight operation by the US Central Command (CENTCOM) targeted around 90 Iranian military facilities and maritime assets, according to US officials. The strikes came after Washington accused Tehran of carrying out attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, effectively ending the fragile ceasefire between the two countries. The latest escalation has raised concerns in India, which operates the Shahid Beheshti terminal under a 10-year agreement signed in 2024. Chabahar Port is central to India’s efforts to establish a trade corridor to Afghanistan and Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan and is a key component of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
